A Balanced Approach to
County Government

"He's reasonable" is one of the best compliments I have received during my terms on the City Council.  The comment reflected specifically on how I had dealt with the subject of a public hearing.  I would like to share a brief recap of the hearing.

I first focused on the facts being presented to us by both sides of the issue.  I then worked through the legal requirements and options available to the Council.  I listened to what my colleagues said.  I knew that the decision that we would make was important to the private and public parties involved.  Like many decisions, there was not a cut-and-dried answer.  I explored how different options might affect the parties.  Ultimately I insisted that the Council take each element in turn.  The result was a "reasonable" decision reflecting both the private and public interests of those affected by the decision.  Yes, the result was a compromise.

The compromise was reached in open session of the Council with all interested parties able to speak to the issues at hand.  There were no backroom deals, no favoritism, and complete transparency in the process and procedures.  This is just one example of how I approach making decisions as a representative of the people.  I practice what I have taught -- open government.
