Economic Development

In responding to our economic crisis, it absolutely critical that the public be kept informed.  Next week, Amy Wetzel will be leading a discussion of rural retailing strategies at the Angels Firehouse at 3PM.  Amy has been invited by the City Council as part its series of workshops on enhancing economic opportunities.  The public is invited and I hope to see you there.

The last few days focused on developing the action plan for economic development in Calaveras County.  Both the Board of Supervisors and the City Council authorized their staffs to move forward with an initiative to enhance the vitality of the local economy.  My business experience has taught me to set clear goals with measurable objectives for any undertaking.  I have engaged with many stakeholders in a variety of settings to develop my approach.  I will be sharing my detailed plan at community meetings soon.

In every discussion of economics in District 4, there is a common realization that we are in a crisis.  Jobs, housing, retail, tourism and virtually every other aspect of our local economy are being affected.  Fuel prices not only raise the price of goods delivered to Calaveras, but also directly impact the some 6,000 commuters who drive out of the county to go to work.

The role of local government may be limited, but it can take effective action.  It can and is facilitating getting leaders from every community together to identify a core vision.  Personally, I was very encouraged to see so many crowded into a small conference working to achieve that vision.
