Calaveras Transitions I'll be having eye surgery next month to remove a cataract in my right eye. Right now that eye is just a bit murky but it annoying enough to get it done. I am really pleased that I can have the surgery locally a first-rate hospital with an outstanding medical team. Reflecting on my cataract made me think about my human frailties as I approach my 65th birthday in June. I'm a bit ahead of the Baby Boomers. I know their public impact of their frailties will be much greater than mine. For most older Californians, the loss of driving privileges is one of the most serious concerns. I know my father was devastated when he lost his driver's license in his 80s. Fortunately, my Mother still drove and they lived in an urban area with a variety of alternative transit options. From my service on the Calaveras Council of Governments, I know that not everyone in our County has those options. Our recent "unmet transit needs" hearings clearly identify the importance of the Calaveras Transit system to our citizens. And it is not just the elderly; but the school aged and handicapped, the working and the retired, who use our County buses. I have been and will continue to be a strong defender of our ever improving bus system. It is a public resource of growing importance in our communities as more of us deal with the raising cost of gas. Public transit will be a critical element to all of us in maintaining the quality of life in our communities as the Baby Boomers mature. Please share your views with me at "Write Lee". |
