Renewable Resources

Much of Thursday was spent working with groups focusing on the development and management of renewable designs and resources.   These include a wide variety of natural elements such as sunshine, water, and plant life.  Here in Calaveras County we have an abundance of these elements.

I regularly participate in the regular monthly meetings of the Central Sierra Resource Conservation and Development (CSRC&D) Council, a grassroots regional non-profit organization made up local groups.   Thursday morning, I wrote a letter to the State water agency supporting the CSRC&D's watershed management proposals.

Harvesting renewable resources requires green technologies such as active and passive solar systems, macro- and micro- hydroelectric generation, and selective forest management.  Thursday evening, I met with a local group of workers in the building trades.  These individuals are applying sustainable solutions to their construction projects.  I believe it is vital that we support our local builders, and that public construction should be green.  For example, the new County jail should meet the United State Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification.  This will save money as well as promote smart building practices.
