District 4 Candidate Forum The last scheduled all-candidates forum was held Monday evening at the Native Sons Hall in Murphys. Sponsored by the Calaveras Chamber of Commerce and the Calaveras Enterprise, it drew about 220 attendees -- the largest of any of the forums. The format was similar to previous meetings -- the same questions asked of each candidate with the lead-off rotating after each question. As it turned out, I had the lead on the first question. I used the time to address the critical issues facing voters in the Fourth District -- the need to protect our quality of life, which in turn requires compatible economic development, and the return of open, transparent county government. In many ways, those issues returned time and again in the questions submitted by the attendees from the floor. Given their questions, I felt as I had correctly understood the concerns of the majority of folks that I have spoken with during the campaign. The forum format did not provide for a real debate. Nevertheless, Tom deviated from the format to attack me a couple of times. I would have liked to have the format allow for a rebuttal. I choose to stick to the organizers' process because each round's question was from the people and they deserved our attention. It is pretty clear where I stand on most of the issues. I have added policy and position statements on this website since the beginning of the campaign. Ultimately, it is the decisions that your supervisor makes that really matter, not their personality or mannerisms. If you would be interested in hosting a klatch (coffee, tea or soup), please use the "Write Lee" link to arrange a date. |
