Public Participation in
County Government

County government needs to start getting more comfortable with public participation.  As an Angels Camp Councilman, I have consistently encouraged public participation, and we need County leadership that supports whole-heartedly the public's right to participate in our own government.  The public's right to know is a fundamental element of our democracy.

We need to involve the public in finding solutions to the infrastructure deficit caused by years of planning failure.   County Government should take the lead in encouraging the various public water, service, and sanitation districts to work together, and cooperate on applying for private, state and federal grants.  It won't be easy, but there is no excuse not to make every effort to ease the financial burden on Calaveras’ ratepayers.  It won't be easy; some have estimated our infrastructure deficit at three hundred million dollars.

Promoting public participation in deliberations of public policy brings more insights and creativity to those discussions.  Encouraging participation in our Special Districts opens new lines of communications and improves representation.  I will continue to be a champion of inter-agency cooperation and inter-governmental collaboration.
