Lee stopped using "Stephen" for two reasons. The first was he had learned that his dad had originally been named "Lee Barrett Seaton" and had changed his name to "Jack" in honor of his mother Bessie Barrett's father, Captain Flavius Josephus "Jack" Barrett. Captain Jack was a larger than life figure, being elected Captain by his local militia during the Civil War, elected to the Texas Legislature, and finally serving in the administration of the Oklahoma Territory. Captain Jack's wife, Saphronia Winn Crutchfield was a member of the Cherokee Nation in the Oklahoma Territory. The second reason was that there was another "Stephen" in his grade school class, and Lee did not like being called "Stevie".
